I grew up in Harrow in London, well for 8 years anyway

our house always had books in it

My parents were big readers and I remember visiting the library every fortnight

My brother who is two years older than me, read from a young age

When I got to school I was told we are not going to learn the English you read in books

We are going to learn ITA

What is it?

The initial teaching alphabet (ITA) is a phonetic alphabet that represents the 44  sounds of spoken English

It's designed to “give beginning readers a logical and reliable reading and writing system”

I couldn't work it out

My mum read to me and would make all these funny sounds

I was so relieved when at the end of that year at school the teachers said

“you know all that stuff we've been teaching you the last year you can forget that”

And we started reading books like it's spoke and ritten :)

There is a great example below where a 5 year old said “it's a frickin' elephant”

Of course, “African elephant” is pronounced "frickin' elephant” in phonetics
