In 2009 I went to Bhutan
Bhutan, officially the kingdom of Bhutan is a landlocked country in south Asia
They don't measure the country by GDP (gross domestic product) they measure themselves by GNH (gross domestic happiness)
Gross national happiness was a term coined by Bhutan's fourth king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, in the 1970s
GNH is a holistic approach to development that prioritizes non-economic aspects of well-being over economic pursuits
The GNH Index is a single number that measures a population's well-being and happiness. It's based on 33 indicators that fall into nine domains, including:
Psychological well-being
Health
Education
Time use
Cultural diversity and resilience
Good governance
Community vitality
Ecological diversity and resilience
Living standards
The GNH Index is used to:
Guide Bhutan's government
Incentivize the government, NGOs, and businesses to improve well-being and happiness
Provide a practical measurement tool for policy making
Deepen the government's understanding of the causes of well-being and happiness
Guide policies to accelerate GNH growth
Ever since I visited Bhutan in 2009 and I heard politicians talk about GDP
I’ve always thought, what would be the situation if we were more Bhutan and measured GNH?
The photo is of children in Bhutan, it is normal for children and adults to wear national dress, the Kira
One child didn’t get the memo :) as he had an Arsenal shirt on
