My father was a sound engineer at the BBC
One of his friends outside work, was a TV news cameraman, Clive Stevens
It was Clive that took the still photos that were syndicated around the world of news
When Airey Neave was blown up by a car bomb by the IRA
Clive, ever the professional, carried his still camera wherever he went
If you search on Google you will still find them
He was also the BBC news cameraman in Poland at the time of Lech Wałęsa
And the fall of the Polish communist Government
Clive and his wife came over to Harrow were we lived in London
I would have been probably 6 or 7 years old
My parents had given my Grandfather's camera (see blog photo)
My Grandfather had been given it for running a suggestion scheme
At a company based near Willesden Junction in London
The advice that Clive told me was two fold
First, always tell stories with the camera
If you go on holiday, take a photo of the airport and the airplane, tell the story of your vacation
The other piece of advice was to always take “sign post”
If you go somewhere, take a photo of the sign of the place that you visit
Then you always have a “document” of that story
