Here we have another leader that does not seem to understand that what we do and say in business is totally transparent.
What do I mean?
- The all hands call
- The town hall call
- The 1 to 1 or team review
- The kick off
- The team meeting
- Your culture and people
We can watch them, record them, use them against you, abd people and companies make decisions from them.
Now you may not like this, you may not agree with it, your eyes may roll, but this is reality today.
This is not a new problem
Back, when I worked in corporate, this will be some 10 years ago, we did an all hands call and we told the sales team it was a briefing about a pending re-organization and we wouldn't record it. Within 30 minutes a bootleg set of slides was being circulated.
Everything you do today, there is the technology to record what you do, this article is about a team briefing, there are videos on TikTok where people have recorded their annual review with HR. You name it, it's been recorded.
There are also videos on TikTok where people have come out of meetings and have felt upset for whatever reason. For example, recently a woman was on long term sick and when she went back to the office, the company had given her job to somebody else.
Now you may not like this, you may not agree with it, your eyes may roll, but this is reality today.
The culture of your business is visible through social media
A friend of mine came to me the other day and asked my advice on a company he had been offered a job at. He said at the interview, how they had a great culture, supported Gay Pride and International women's day, black lives matter (BLM), etc etc.
He asked me if he should work there.
I looked them up on LinkedIn and said, "no you will hate it".
"why?" he said.
"Because, it's too white, there is only one woman on the leadership team".
He turned the job down.
Now, maybe the company did have a great culture, but the culture they projected on LinkedIn, was "white, male and stale". In the US I think they call it a "Bro culture".
That company will never know why that person turned down the job, which is why as a business you need to be taking control of your Linkedin culture view, because the modern buyer, the modern job hunter and the modern investor are all looking you up and checking you out and making decisions.
Now you may not like this, you may not agree with it, your eyes may roll, but this is reality today.
The sooner you empower your employees on social media the better!

By now all company executives and business owners should know that their words and actions have power. A few sentences can destroy a brand or career. But a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a company called MillerKnoll, formerly Herman Miller, got more publicity than she bargained for when she made what she thought was an inspirational speech during a Zoom meeting.
