I’ve just finished reading Tom Miner’s book Social First Brands – How Modern Brands Create Community, Loyalty and Growth, and it exceeded even my high expectations
Since it’s published by my own publisher, Kogan Page, I was hoping it would be good, but it’s actually the best book on social media I’ve read this year
Tom gets straight to the point on page 4: “Social media marketing” has too often become nothing more than swapping the telephone (cold calling) for the same outdated push practices on social platforms
In other words, companies are simply posting content and hoping that someone buys
At DLA Ignite, we’ve been saying the same thing for nine years, this isn’t social, it’s broadcasting
As Tom rightly puts it, “nobody likes being marketed at”
Instead, he offers a better way forward: building real communities, creating authentic connections, and putting people, not campaigns, at the centre of your strategy
Conclusion:
If you want to stop wasting time with push tactics and start growing through trust, loyalty, and community, Social First Brands is a must-read
It’s a refreshing, practical, and timely guide for any business that’s serious about winning in today’s social-first world
