Here’s the data showing AI isn’t coming for the jobs market, it’s already here
And it’s hitting big time
👔 Hiring? We’ve got a “frozen jobs market”
The Neuron Daily put it bluntly in a recent newsletter (worth subscribing to if you want AI insights)
“The job market is officially weird. Really weird.”
In June, the US added 147,000 jobs… but 85% of them were in education and healthcare
Everyone else? Crickets
Economists are calling it a “frozen job market”
Companies aren’t firing, but they’re not hiring either
What’s driving it? AI
Employers are pouring energy into making existing teams more productive with AI tools instead of bringing in fresh blood
🔥 Even Sam Altman got in on this
On July 4th, he dropped a patriotic “techno-capitalism” manifesto, promising technology would lift everyone in the “up elevator” together
Great vision, Sam
But the data tells a different story: if you’re employed, you’re golden
If you’re looking? You’re stuck on the ground floor
📊 The AI takeover in management decisions
The Rundown highlighted a ResumeBuilder survey showing how deeply AI has crept into managerial roles:
60% of managers use AI tools to decide raises, promotions, and firings
ChatGPT is the tool of choice for 53%, with Copilot and Gemini trailing behind
Worryingly, 1 in 5 managers let AI make final decisions with zero human oversight
Nearly half were asked to evaluate whether AI could replace team members and 43% actually followed through
Entry-level employees have already felt the heat
Now the question is: will AI start automating managers next?
🎓 Graduates aren’t spared either
Graduate job openings are at their lowest level in seven years, down 12% compared to last year
Jack Kennedy, senior economist at Indeed, said:
“New entrants to the job market are facing a challenging time.”
While 85% of UK workers fear AI is replacing entry-level jobs, 73% of HR leaders claim it’s letting them hire graduates into higher-level roles directly
So maybe there’s a silver lining… if you’re highly skilled
💡 Here’s the reality:
AI isn’t just reshaping jobs. It’s reshaping the rules of employment
✅ If you’ve got a job, AI might make you more productive (or indispensable)
❌ If you’re trying to break in? The ladder’s getting pulled up
The big question now:
Will businesses use AI to create opportunity, or just protect the status quo?
Because for a lot of people, that “up elevator” Sam Altman talked about still feels like it’s stuck on the ground floor
