Back in 2013, Julie and I visited Mexico
We had both been to Peru and had visited a number of Inca sites such as Machu Picchu
And wanted to carry this interest in history on by visiting Mayan sites in Mexico
Our tour started in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico
We were welcomed to a riot, with tear gas, riot shields and water cannons
Which is a story for another day
We then toured across Mexico visiting Mayan sites
One site is called Aguada Fénix which is a large Mayan ruin located in the state of Tabasco, Mexico, right on the border with Guatemala
We also went to see the famous site Chichen Itza, known locally as Chicken Pizza :)
As part of one journey we stopped at a lovely coffee shop
There were lots of books on the shelves and being a bibliophile (I like books)
I got up and looked at the books, there were books on left wing heroes, such as Trotsky, Lenin, Marx, etc
We asked the guide, it was strange that there were so many books on left wing heroes
It was then she pointed out the lovely coffee shop was owned by Zapatista Army of National Liberation
(Spanish: Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, EZLN), often referred to as the Zapatistas
The guide hadn't mentioned it in case it scared us tourists
In fact, many tourists wouldn't even know the group and the fact they “own” a large part of Mexico
The coffee shop even sold merchandise
We decided to get a t-shirt which Julie often wears to work
We often chuckle that Julie is in a corporate meeting and nobody realises she's wearing a t-shirt of a ultra leftwing guerrilla group from Mexico
