Signals of Affection: A Father’s Gift

To most people, this probably looks like nothing more than an old heap of junk. To my dad, though, it was his own unique way of showing love.

What you’re looking at is an R1155, a classic British communications receiver. During World War II, the Royal Air Force paired it with the T1154 transmitter across their heavy bomber fleet, including the Avro Lancaster, Handley Page Halifax, Vickers Wellington, and Short Sunderland.

When I was in my teens, my dad tracked one down for me. He spent time building a custom accompaniment unit using valve technology, housing the power supply transformer, an amplifier, and a speaker. The R1155 was exceptional for shortwave listening, and I think deep down he hoped to spark a passion in me to become a radio amateur. He wanted to help me get comfortable around electronics, steering me toward a trade he understood and respected.

I eventually left home and ended up leaving the receiver behind. But looking back now, I realize just how much thought went into that gesture. Although my path ultimately led to the tech industry rather than pure electronics, his spark still caught fire.

It is remarkable how fathers expressed their love in days gone by, not always with grand speeches, but through heavy metal, glowing valves, and quiet encouragement. I only hope he knew that his gift did exactly what he wanted it to do and I appreciated it and him.
