"Have you thought about doing a year for charity?" a friend asked me a few years back.
It was a simple question, but it sparked an immediate realization: you don’t need to wait for January 1st or some mythical "perfect time" to make a difference. You can start that year whenever you want. In Atomic Habits, James Clear makes the case for starting immediately by scaling a new behavior down until it's so small you simply can't say no. Forget waiting for motivation, just lower the friction until taking action takes two minutes or less.
That’s exact path I decided to take. The cause I chose to champion was the arts, and I started with a few simple, manageable moves:
Gallery Memberships: I joined both the Tate and the Royal Academy of Arts (RA) here in London. Years later, we’re still active members at the RA. (If you ever come to London, trust me a trip to the RA will be for more pleasurable than the Tate)
Physical Music: As anyone who knows me can attest, I’m a huge fan of physical media. I started routinely buying Jazz and Classical CDs, a small, tangible way to put money directly back into the creative ecosystem.
Pedal Power: I paired that quiet financial backing with some actual sweat equity, taking on sponsored bike rides like the Palace to Palace (from Buckingham Palace to Windsor Castle) in aid of the Kings Trust and the off-road London to Brighton challenge.
Giving back doesn't require waiting for a New Year's resolution or burning yourself out on grand gestures. Whether it’s picking up a CD, backing a local gallery, or hopping on a bike, the secret is just picking something ridiculously simple and starting today. Small actions compound fast, so why wait?
