My Dad was a BBC sound engineer

One of those quiet professionals who made everything work but never stood in the spotlight

He was promoted to the then “state-of-the-art” Pebble Mill studios in Birmingham, which in BBC terms was a very big deal

Pebble Mill was home to some iconic programmes: Juliet Bravo, The Archers, Down Your Way, Gardeners’ World, All Creatures Great and Small, and the live shows Pebble Mill at One and Saturday Night at the Mill

It was busy, demanding work, he worked irregular hours and everyday was different

Pebble Mill at One meant early starts for rehearsals, but it also meant he was often home in time to eat with the family, which mattered to him

My Dad was also a huge classical music fan

Properly classical

As in, orchestras, scores, and composers

Pop music passed him by

So one day, after finishing Pebble Mill at One, he came home and asked my brother and me a question that stopped us in our tracks:

“Do you know who Kate Bush is?”

Of course we did

Everyone knew who Kate Bush was

Here are the shows from 1978 that my father worked on

Somewhere between the cables, microphones, and mixing desks, my Dad, the classical music purist, developed a crush on Kate Bush

And then he made his one, fatal mistake

He told my Mum

Conclusion

There are some things you keep to yourself

Especially when you’re married

And especially when the person you’re crushing on is Kate Bush
