This weekend I had the pleasure of attending a truly unique art exhibition by John Horsley, tucked away upstairs at The Birds, just two minutes from Leytonstone Tube
What unfolded was far more than just an art show, it was an immersive, multi-sensory experience that blended history, sound, and community
John’s work is inspired by the haunting beauty of the three concrete “listening ears” at Denge near Dungeness in Kent, early warning acoustic mirrors from a pre-radar era
(There are not actually on canvas, they are printed on aluminum before somebody corrects me, but it makes a great title)
Each piece of art came with its own soundtrack, accessed via QR code, turning each painting into a portal of sound and memory
John gave a short talk, offering a glimpse into the story and inspiration behind each piece, adding even more depth to the experience
What started as an art viewing quickly transformed into a celebration
With around 50 amazing people gathered, the energy was electric
We were treated to a DJ set by the legendary Steven Proctor
I also got a selfie with the legendary photographer Frank Jenkinson famous for his Killing Joke, Joy Division, Bauhaus and Postpunk Photography
Big thanks to John for creating such a soulful and thought-provoking experience
It was a reminder of how art and music, when woven together with storytelling and community, can leave a lasting impact
If you're ever near Leytonstone and hear the echoes of sound art calling, follow them
